A Day of Workshops with Tempest & Guest Instructor
Asharah
& Hipnotique: An Evening of Bellydance
Workshop Descriptions (instructor
bios below):
"Danse Mécanique" with Asharah - 10:45am-1:45pm
(3 hours!)
Integrating Elegant and Technical Movement for Tribal Fusion Bellydance
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
This workshop will help you refine your technique and add elegance to
your bellydance movement. While sharp pops and locks are an essential
part of the tribal dancer's repertoire, grace and polish are equally,
if not more, important for conveying expression and feeling from the stage
to the audience. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm-up
that will prepare the body for fluid arm-work, well-defined isolations,
and dramatic extension. We will drill smooth bellydance movements (such
as arm waves, interior hip circles, and undulations) and hard contraction
movements (such as chest locks and hip work in various directions), and
Asharah will teach a short combination using these moves in a choreography,
emphasizing flow and musical interpretation.
"Between The Veils" with Tempest - 2:15-4:15pm (2 hours!)
Discover the darker side of veilwork, from dramatic entrances, intricate
and intimate veilplay, to exiting with a flourish that will leave 'em
wanting more. Learn to truly dance with your veil and tame it's inner
cat, see it as a partner and not a prop. We'll cover proper veil technique,
fusion movements and accents, pros and cons of materials and presentations,
and making effective use of your veil. Be sure to bring at least one three
yard veil-rectangular or circular. Can be silk, chiffon, or other light,
flowing material. All levels welcome.

About Asharah, Guest Instructor
Asharah has been performing since the age of six as a dancer, figure
skater, and singer. As a bellydancer, she is best known for her
dramatic fusion of tribal and cabaret styles, but also has extensive
experience in Turkish, Egyptian and American bellydance. She recently
earned her Level 2 certification in the Suhaila Salimpour format,
and aims to blend this format with American Tribal Style bellydance.
Her technique, musicality, and finger cymbal playing skills have
been noted and admired across the country. She is deeply grateful
to Alexia (Kim Leary), Artemis Mourat, Suhaila Salimpour, and others
who have guided her along the way.
In
addition to traveling around the country to teach sold-out workshops,
she teaches regular tribal belly dance classes at two of the Washington,
DC, area's finest dance studios, Joy of Motion and Saffron Dance.
She currently performs around the country and periodically at the
Shisha Lounge in Sterling, Virginia. She will be releasing her first
instructional DVD Modern Tribal Bellydance, produced by WorldDanceNewYork,
in January 2008, and she is featured on the groundbreaking DVD Gothic
Bellydance: The Darker Side of Fusion, produced by World Dance New
York. From 2003-2005 she performed with the avant-garde troupe Martiya
Possession and before that was a two year member of Raks Odalisque,
Princeton University's Middle Eastern dance troupe. She also provided
live percussion and graphic design for Maduro's debut release Shimmer
Sustain.
Asharah
is not only an accomplished dancer but also has a B.A. in Near Eastern
Studies from Princeton University. Ever since her childhood, Asharah
has been deeply interested in Middle Eastern arts and culture. She
believes that every belly dancer must know the history and culture
of this dance, whether she is performing it in its traditional forms
or fusing it with others.

About
Tempest, Your Instructor & Hostess
Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer recently relocated
from Bay Area of California to the Jersey Shore. Although she enjoys
studying what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the
dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her
visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance;
engaging the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate
expression, and sensuous, mesmerizing movement.
She
finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces,
from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work
of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century
dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is most well-known for her Gothic
Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the
first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled
"The Darker Side of Fusion", it's sequel "Gothic
Belly Dance: Revelations", and Hollywood Music Center's "Bellydance
Underworld". She also has an instructional DVD geared towards
the alternatively-minded entitled "Bellydance for Beautiful
Freaks" produced by WorldDanceNewYork.

in the state are here at the shore! The workshop location is minutes away
