of the Dance
Sat. 3/10, 11am-1pm
Cost $35 pre-registered/$40 drop-in
This
intimate master class with Tempest will be taught in two complimentary
sections: Part I: Balance & Form and Part II: From the Inside
Out:Truly making the dance your own, creating your own voice and
personal style, comes not just from the movements you do, but
how you translate them through your body and the energy you use
to engage the audience with. If youre looking to find your
own voice in the dance and strive to be uniquely YOU, this workshop
will actively engage your body and mind, and give you the tools
in order to make it possible, within the framework of bellydance.
Part
I: Balance and Form will cover accessing your core strength to
get greater control over isolations and fluidity whether
youre standing still, turning, spinning or traveling
and maintain control over your entire body. We will explore daily
exercises to enhance your dance connectivity and personalize your
core movements.
In
Part II: From The Inside Out, we will focus on adding intensity
and power to your armwork, footwork and interior, while learning
to move energy throughout your body and connect with the audience.
From exploring simple elegance to adding more complexity
and contrast, get more satisfaction out of both your practice
time and your performances! Suitable for all styles of bellydance.
About
Tempest:
Based in Providence, RI, Tempest pulls from her visual arts background,
literary tendencies and global inspirations to create dance that
crosses the boundaries of time and culture. She is the premiere
instructor of both Gothic and Steampunk bellydance in North America,
and her extensive work in these genres has helped to define and
develop the movements across the world. Her compellingly artful
performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical, unique and
expressive style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with
a transcendent approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized
the look of modern bellydance and continue to inspire new and
old generations of dancers alike.
Tempest
has studied extensively many forms of traditional bellydance
from Turkish Oriental, Romani, Classic & Modern Egyptian,
American Cabaret, Folkloric & Trance dances of North Africa
and the Mediterranean. Tempest regularly studies with masters
of the dance, particularly focusing her study on traditional and
folkloric forms of the dance as she feels that the best
fusion comes as close to the source as possible. In particular,
Amel Tafsout, Artemis Mourat, Dalia Carella, and Lee Ali are treasured
teachers and inspirations.
In
2011, she created Tapestry Dance Retreat, and in 2012 she is producing
Waking Persephone: Dancing Through the Dark & Unusual
both events rooted in Providence, RI. She also leads Museum Quality:
Art School for Bellydancers intensives all over the world. She
finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places and faces,
from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work
of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century
dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is particularly well-known for
her Nouveau Noir Dance performances which transport the
audience back in time to the early 20th Century as well as the
fantasy realms of Steampunk and Retro-Futurism, and sacred-fusion,
ritualistic forms of bellydance. Her devotion to art, creativity
and innovation in dance marks her as a stand-out performer who
continues to evolve and set the bar for others in the fusion bellydance
genres, while her passionate and in-depth instruction pushes dancers
of all levels to find their own voices through the dance.
"Anatomy
of a Song and Dance"
with Tempest & Nathaniel Johnstone
Sat. 3/10, 2-4pm
Cost: $35 pre-registered/$40 drop-in
Are
you hearing the music when you dance? Are you REALLY listening?
Most importantly, when you dance, does the audience see the music
through you? A key task of a dancer is to be a visual representation
and interpretation of the music they are performing to. To achieve
this, you need to be able to recognize the layers present in your
music, and choose what to work with and how to translate it into
movement. In this workshop, we will work with a single song by
Nathaniel Johnstone, take it apart layer by layer, address the
musicality of each part, how it translates into movement on stage,
and then put it back together into a solid dance. This workshop
will aid you in learning to listen more effectively, identify
instrumentation, and make more fabulous choices about what to
use as a foundation and what to accent in any piece of music you
may wish to dance to.
